Malcom X Paper

Malcom X was one of the most powerful and inspiring leaders of blacks in America during the 1960’s. He sentenced to seven years in prison for committing robbery. Although he was in such a weird an uncomfortable place, as the outside world may see it, he took advantage of his time and further educated himself. He also studied and researched the teachings of Elijah Muhammad, and would later become an orthodox Muslim. After years of being the leading spokesperson for black independence. He was later assassinated in 1965. I believe that Malcom X wrote the article “Learning to Read” not only to let his audience know about his experiences, but to show that no matter what situation may arrive, something positive can always come from it if you work hard enough and strive for a goal. If you are willing to work hard and be determined, nothing but positive things will come from it. The author writes, “I saw that the best things I could do was get ahold of a dictionary-to study, to learn some words” (1). Malcom X took advantage of the time he had and decided to better his knowledge of the world around him and better his vocabulary. He was bound and determined to teach himself all these new words he had never heard or seen before. He says, “I’d never realized so many words existed!” (1). He goes on about how he could not comprehend what he was reading at first from the dictionary so he began to copy everything down. He would copy every single thing down from the dictionary to his paper even down to the punctuation. Then he would sit there and re-read his paper back to himself. I believe he included this process in this essay because he wanted to show and tell the audience the way that he learned things and how it may have taken him long, but he was willing to do whatever it took to learn the words from the dictionary.
